Cheap package means lower accommodation or lesser inclusions. So before jumping across cheap package check hotels and inclusion / exclusions. Same tour can be quoted with low and high rates both. Hence it is important to be careful before selecting a cheap looking package. 

2. Make Sure You Take Travel Insurance : This is another must do. Many will argue what is the need of the travel insurance as one might have health insurance or similar. Travel insurance is completely different as it covers travel aspects like loss of passport, missed connections, personal liability etc. Also it may be worth mentioning that incase of foreign travel your domestic medical insurance might not be valid. So you need to insurance yourself before travel. Many countries has put travel insurance as a mandatory requirement for Visa application

3. Assess Risk Involved In Each Tour : A tour package isn't just one thing. It's assimilation of multiple array of services. Which includes airport transfer, sightseeing transfer, sightseeing, show tickets, hotel bookings etc etc. What is important here is that one should know what exactly is in the tour. This is important as one tour may not be suitable for certain person. For example people with cardiac issue should avoid adventure activities or high mountain sightseeing etc. A good tour operator will help you know these. 

4. See Travel Advisory For The Destination : Where ever you are traveling, it is important to check travel advisory of and about that place. This can be found on embassy sites or even in different websites. Tour operator can also advise you about that. You need to know and be cautious about certain this like law & order issues, weather conditions, volcano advisory etc. This will save you from unnecessary risks to a huge extend. 

5. Know Laws Of Land Of Destination : By saying this I do not mean you need to a student of law. What I meant is you need to be aware of certain laws which affects tourist or tourism related activities like custom laws, immigration laws, etc. This is wonderful way to get aware of rituals going at the country.
